Discover the perfect substrate without rock wool 

The search for sustainable cultivation solutions continues among vegetable growers. To ultimately create a better world that uses less valuable raw materials, we must continue to pioneer and develop. Under the motto 'to stand still is to go backwards', Gemapa started looking for a solution to grow (Bell) peppers more sustainably. For example, a new substrate trough has been developed in collaboration with Gemapa and Beekenkamp Verpakkingen for the cultivation of (Bell) peppers (fruit vegetable crops). 

Rock wool mats are used as standard in fruit vegetable crops, but the market is looking for an alternative. In addition, more and more large parties (such as supermarkets and consumers) throughout the chain want to grow in more sustainable ways. Our customer was looking for an alternative to the annual purchase of rock wool, which is not only expensive but also not very sustainable. Besides the fact that rock wool must be replaced every year, it is also not biodegradable. 

The reusable substrate trough that has been developed can be filled with different substrates as desired. Such as perlite, pumice stone or coconut. Furthermore, the hight creates optimal conditions for an ideal root climate with the right ratio of oxygen and water. The excess water is also guided to the side towards the drainage openings. You can choose from two or four drainage openings. The drainage at the end prevents the roots from growing out of the trough. 

The substrate trough is made of high-quality recycled polypropylene. In addition, the trough is designed in such a way that it can be steamed. The trough can be steamed filled with or without substrate.
